TO MARKET… TO MARKET…
Stellenbosch’s bountiful and inviting organic, slow
food market, held every Saturday, beckons. A
cornucopia of your favourite things are on the tables;
cheeses, honey, dried figs, charcuterie, breads, choice
pastries, wine and dishes on the ready for the week
ahead. Fill your capacious basket and head for home.

Tree lined Stellenbosch, one of South Africa’s
most glorious and historic university towns, is the
perfect venue for a taste of the Cape’s harvest, which
comes to you environmentally friendly and sustainably
produced. You will find the market at Bosman’s
Crossing in a rural setting under the slopes of
Onderpappegaaiberg on the Plankenberg River.

Specialities include Madagascan woven bags; leather trimmed, bright and colourful. Raffia baskets, handbags, placemats, curtains, table cloths, greeting cards, sunhats and much more from ‘Ravinala’.
Italian cheeses from ‘La Masseria’, famous for their blend of rich mascarpone and flavourful gorgonzola. Italian charcuterie, crusty farmhouse wheels of bread and pasta in many guises; ravioli, tortellini and more.
Janine Pienaar from ‘Earth to You’ prepares a wide choice of breads from yeast free rye, gluten free banana bread, wheat free blueberry muffins, to low GI muffins, suitable for diabetics to wheat free carrot cake.
Handcrafted Swiss and French styled cheeses from ‘Kimilili’ in Tulbach where they raise their own cows (no hormones or antibiotics in their feed). Natural farm house practices are followed and they process their own milk. A great supporter of the organic food movement in South Africa.
Choose the freshest nuts from Peter Owen’s ‘By Nature’. Crisp almonds from the nut orchards in the Overberg area. Look for walnuts in season, myriad sun dried fruit, gorgeous crimson figs from last summer, later there will be dried peaches, pears and a sweet favourite, pineapple.

Don’t miss freshly made waffles! A taste of Bienenstich (honeybee cake) made in a slightly different way with a butter cream instead of the traditional rich custard filling. Pristine service and homely treats. Kirschkuchen made with plums or black cherries and scattered with toasted almond flakes or crumb topped, all divine with whipped cream. Not for the faint hearted! Take home a slice of Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (Black Forest Cake) a renowned blend of chocolate cherries, whipped cream and shaved chocolate, a specialty throughout Swabia. Enjoy it with an espresso.

Organic mangoes, varied salad leaves,
granadillas, fiery chillies, ripe figs in summer,
trays full of herbs and vivid flowers by
the armful. Savour the scent of freshly
baked bread, which wafts out as you
arrive at the market place.

Jane Selander sources local and handcrafted cheeses for neighbourhood markets at Stellenbosch, Salt River and Tokai. These cheeses are produced as naturally as possible, using no colourants, preservatives or additives. The milk is from veld fed animals. They do goat’s and sheep’s milk cheese, and of course gouda - mild and strong, as well as an award winning cheddar, matured for 12 months. Look out for a good creamy gorgonzola sourced from a Gauteng Italian family.
Oded Schwartz in his kitchen, preparing some of the preserves and superb chutneys that are available at his stand on Saturdays. From fragrant harrief to full flavoured quince jelly as well as a quince chutney and a marvellous caramelised onion marmalade.
Oded specialises in really excellent jams, jellies, marmalades and chutneys. See his popular step- by-step orange Seville marmalade - a real winner on www.showcook.com. Next on the agenda are his prepared foods with Middle Eastern bias.
At ‘Rudi’s Sausage Deli’ you will find a large variety of good sausages that are ready to eat or those that require cooking such as the Toulouse and others that are made in the French, Italian or German style. Preservative free and carefully seasoned with freshly ground spices and herbs, these are state of the art classic sausages that are made with the best possible ingredients; organic pork and free range beef,
As you wander from stall to stall looking, nibbling, being intrigued, you will see a rich variety of free-range organic meats; plump farm chickens, biltong and various styles of charcuterie, particularly excellent sausages from ‘Carta da Musée’. There is even smoked fish and yes, Saldanah oysters.

Crisp flat breads smothered with Parma ham, rocket and parmesan shavings drizzled with a balsamic reduction and olive oil. A quick treat to munch on the hop.
Blush pink Himalayan crystal salt with many health benefits; an excellent source of minerals, balancing blood pressure and organic. SGS is the global bench mark for quality.

Organic Himalayan crystal salt, charcuterie and
excellent breads, delicious with cheese, described as
‘milk’s leap toward immortality’ by Clifton Fadiman!

Prepared with love and passion!
Neighbourhood markets foster a tradition of farmers and cooks, who harvest and prepare their wares for local markets. A practice that has flourished particularly in France for centuries and is now taking hold successfully in South Africa. A great option for those that cook with love and passion, and a showcase for their expertise. All of this very much a part of the ‘Slow Food Movement’. A revival that is welcome and not a moment too soon.

Handmade with French flair, a wide choice from ‘Bonaparte Flannerie’; patisserie, fine tartlets filled with fruits, especially berries in season, delicate slices of apple or pears on a custard base. Moreish! Take home for that special tea party or as an instant dessert course. After a morning’s visit head off to the Dalla Cia family owned ‘Pane e Vino Foodbar’ where you can enjoy a superb cappuccino, an espresso, a focaccia sandwich or a light lunch and a glass of their wine.

Visit the wine farms of Stellenbosch in an easy stroll - developed in association with the ‘Stellenbosch Wine Routes’ to showcase the wine estates of Stellenbosch - including organic and garagist wines.
