The
frequent and sophisticated flyer already knows the magic formula.
Place
everything you need on a bed. Divide it in half and that in half again.
It
sounds so absurdly simple, yet for some of us it proves almost impossible!
Packing
is not only about clothes. There is the essential carry on luggage.
Assembling this can be a breeze or a nightmare. The very frequent
traveller often has prepared pouches of necessities that are kept intact and
used from one trip to the next. This may sound extravagant, but it does
save time and money over all.
Carry a spray bottle filled with
mineral water for hydrating the skin and
a small bottle of cleanser and toner in one for removing your makeup. A
colour free moisturizing mask to avoid skin dehydration while you are sleeping
is also an option. Moisturizing
creams are essential for men too!
Ideally carry
a spray to ward off germs that
circulate in the aircraft. Try 15-20 drops Tea Tree Oil in 250 ml water,
pack into a small spray. Tea Tree Oil is a strong antiseptic with a fresh,
lovely aroma. Simply spray all around and breath it in! All
the above can be carried in your hand luggage.
In
your carry-on luggage, include
all the toiletries you need. Use
small plastic bottles or samples. Keep as light as possible.
Most
importantly carry a medicine kit. This should include all your personal
medication. Divide your medical needs into groups, such as cold cures and
the necessities to deal with stomach complaints etc. You
may have to adjust your kit a little depending on your destination.
For example game parks will require insect repellents and possible malaria
medication.
A
wonderful tip is to take a sterile disposable syringe. You might find yourself
in a foreign country where language is a barrier, and the doctor you have called
attempts to use a glass syringe to inject you. THIS IS NOT SAFE A
disposable syringe also provides you with a sterile needle, which is needed
occasionally.
It
is important to remember that some countries forbid travellers to carry
medication that contains codeine. Greece and Turkey are two examples.
Overcome this by taking a signed and stamped letter from your doctor.
Take
heart, one usually returns without needing any strong medication. You may
suffer a few scrapes and blisters, so don’t forget such basics as plasters and
antiseptic cream. Never forget your sunscreen.
Jewellery,
as little as possible, should be safely stowed in your carry on luggage, your handbag or on
your person (best option). Check rings, if they are loose they can fall
off during the flight, particularly when the aircraft is cold. Usually you
discover the loss when you've already left the plane!
Always
have a generous spare change of underwear and clothing in case your check-in luggage goes
astray and you have a chic lunch date on the same day! Happily airlines almost always find lost luggage, but it can take
up to a week! To make things easier during the search label your luggage inside and out and carry a spare set of locks and
keys on a key ring attached to a pouch. So simple and easy.
Neck
cushions are invaluable, they take no space in your carry on luggage and can make
your trip more comfortable.
