Product offerings are e-mailed on Thursday, you reply with your selection by Sunday and on Monday your box is delivered to your doorstep. Good things are happening here. Extensive organic meat means boerewors, hamburger patties and spare ribs. Local, seasonal produce still reigns and take-aways have taken off. There are little tubs of date and honey, and halva organic ice-cream, home-made soups and whole-wheat pies decorated with ‘M’ for mushroom, ‘V’ for veggie and so on. The organic baby food is always in demand.

Thursday’s are busy at Zetlers. It’s when your pre-ordered boxes of organic veggies – small (R70), large (R120) – arrive from the farmlands of Robertson, along with a weekly quota of Camphill’s yoghurt, cream, feta cheese and must-have rye and hearth breads. An avenue of blue hydrangeas and blue gums lead to this historic Groot Drakenstein farm that produces organically grown herbs, and mini veg such as marrows, sweetcorn and fine green beans. All, freshly picked, are available, in season from Pickstones Nursery at the entrance to the estate. An organic deli and fresh food market is planned for end 2005.

The range of health foods, at this little venue, has grown enormously over the last year. It now includes an excellent spice range, dried fruit and nuts (including the very illusive dried cranberries), rice products of every description, sugar and milk substitutes and wheat-free alternatives. Organic vegetables arrive on Wednesdays and Fridays. The freezer is packed with frozen vegetarian meals, the excellent Stonehaven organic chickens and tofu ice cream. Goat’s milk yoghurt and organic cheeses fill the fridge. Friendly service and nutritional advice make it popular with locals.

The glossy annual, now in its sixth year of publication, is published by New Media Publishing, and went on sale in September 2005. It is still available from selected Woolworths stores, CNA, Exclusive Books, Spar, Checkers, farm stalls, delis and wine shops in the Western Cape.  A copy of Eat In will also be distributed nationally with the March issue of Woolworths TASTE magazine, due on shelf in the next couple of weeks.
