Small ship adventure cruising is a fast growing phenomenon, and was pioneered by Lars-Eric Lindblad who led the first laymen expeditions to Antarctica in 1966. His son Sven now runs Lindblad Expeditions, who entered into an unprecedented alliance with National Geographic in 2004. In March they are taking over the Orion and this has many implications for this popular segment of the maritime tourism market. Their goal is not to change the ship’s well established modus operandi, but to augment her capacities.

With the incidence of cancer rising, the World Cancer Research Fund International has results for up to 2012, the latest data available, and they state, “There were an estimated 14.1 million cancer cases around the world in 2012, of these 7.4 million cases were in men and 6.7 million in women. This number is expected to increase to 24 million by 2035.”  

A sobering thought.
