LONDON LETTER

By Astrid Michelow

Some years have passed since I last wrote my London Letter. At that time, we were still immersed in the banking crisis and were reeling from the effects of a global downturn. Today I ask myself what has changed in the ensuing years to this ‘green and pleasant land… this Sceptred Isle’. The answer which immediately comes to mind is that the Majesty of England is immutable. The history, the culture, the awe inspiring architecture and just the grandiose quality of all that we see around us remains breathtakingly beautiful and unchanged. Yet ironically there are changes…

ECO ADVENTURES IN ROCKTAIL BAY

Roy Watts visits the Maputaland Marine Reserve
and we share in their spectacular biosphere

Nestling in a dune forest in a remote corner of South Africa, the Rocktail Bay Beach Camp is custodian to one of the premier dive sites of the world. Every year pregnant ragged tooth sharks come to an underwater cave system to have their pups. It is also where giant leatherback turtles return to the place where they hatched 20 years ago to lay their eggs. Both these events occur in December, January and February every year.

THE WHITE WATERS OF CHIANG MAI

Travel with Roy Watts to Thailand which
has been a permanent item on his bucket list.

Since I lived in a converted teak rice barn in the tiny village of Talad Mai 20kms north of Chiang Mai back in 2004 I have always wanted to return. There is a wonderful simplicity to life there. The weather is generally fine, the cost of living very low, and the Buddhist ethos of peace and goodwill has filtered through to the national psyche. There are plenty of things to do in a country steeped in cultural, historic and culinary interest, along with places of great natural beauty. There is also lots of scope for fantastic adventures.

SUSTAINED ENERGY FOR GLUTEN-FREE EATERS

By Liesbet Delport (Registered Dietician SA)
& Sharon Alderson (Registered Paramedic)

Sustained Energy for Gluten-Free Eaters was born out of shear necessity when Sharon Alderson was discovered to have coeliac disease, which is in fact a gluten sensitivity that sapped Sharon’s health, energy and almost her life before it was diagnosed. As she explained it was astonishing how few books there were with gluten-free recipes using ingredients that were easily available. Recipes which make it possible to prepare and eat in a gluten-free balanced way and live as one would wish to do in a coeliac free life.

Over time Liesbet and Sharon set about producing these dishes, testing the recipes until they were perfect and, as Sharon says, we hope for everyone who uses this book, that this way of eating will contribute to their ongoing well being.
