The evening of the 25th July was a momentous one at the Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel, the finale of the Cape Legends Inter Hotel Challenge. This was a fabulously exciting special occasion. The ballroom was ablaze in shades of gold.

Our stunning launch in Cape Town took place at the Taj where they recently unveiled their new historic ‘Reserve’ ABC Banking Hall Est. 1927, set to become one of the Cape’s new most stylish venues.

C E L E B R A T E  T H E  D A Y!

 

 

 Winning Duo of Chefs; Lauren Case and Josh Wiid of the South African Chefs Academy created an excellent starter of braised pork cheek, served with light gnocchi and flavourful celeriac studded with nastergal berries.


 

South African Minister of Tourism Marthinus van Schalkwyk gave an excellent and pertinent keynote address updating the audience on tourism trends, undoubtedly South Africa is on the march with excellent hotel occupancies. Charismatic Reuben Riffel presented the prizes and gave a warm and eloquent address to the students. Our guest speaker was South African born Rozanne Stevens, who is now a popular broadcaster and teacher in Ireland. Rozanne has recently brought out Relish BBQ and Al Fresco Food, the second book in ‘The Ish Factor Series’

INTER HOTEL CHALLENGE! CELEBRATION DINNER

 

It was a glittering evening at the historic Vineyard Hotel & Spa on 26th September 2013. The culmination of much preparation, press lunches with Executive Chefs to introduce their candidates chefs and wine stewards. There were grape to glass experiences in the splendid vineyards with top winemakers and finally a two day cook-off at the South African Chefs Academy with the ten hotels who entered for the first Inter Hotel Challenge in Cape Town and a first in South Africa.

 

 

The term hospitality embraces many facets and what the Inter hotel Challenge does is to promote nurturing and mentoring for our candidate chefs and wine stewards. Everyone should be congratulated on their splendid entries. We know that not everyone can be a winner, but what was important was that they participated and succeeded beyond expectation!

2013! INTER HOTEL CHALLENGE COOK-OFF

 

To nurture future Executive Chefs and Sommeliers, giving tangible recognition for striving, aspiration and enthusiasm!

 

 

The Inter Hotel Challenge took place over a period of two days at the South African Chefs Academy in Cape Town where our young contestants showed their colours producing a stunning three course menu. Each course was accompanied by the appropriate Cape Legends’ wine chosen by the Candidate Wine Steward in consultation with the Candidate Chefs.

OUT TO LUNCH AT QUEEN VICTORIA HOTEL

 

A Chef’s Table with Craig Paterson, Executive Chef of the three Newmark Hotels in the Waterfront with Cape Legends and Durbanville Hills Cellar Master Martin Moore, introducing their candidates for the Inter Hotel Challenge.

As pretty as a picture! Salmon mi cuit and asparagus with a citrus and pine dressing was a good combination with the Durbanville Hills Biesjes Craal Sauvignon Blanc, echoing the flavours. The wine with a tinge of green pepper, the tartness of gooseberry and light asparagus, and the crisp and fresh fruit finish was a good foil to the salmon.

The stunning five-star Queen Victoria, Dash Restaurant and the luxurious Dock House were the focus for two delightful days, hosting members of the press who mingled with guests of Showcook and Lori Milner, dynamic originator of Beyond The Dress, down from Johannesburg and making her Cape Town debut at the Queen Victoria.
