The winners of the 5th annual Distell Inter Hotel Challenge were announced at a glittering gala awards dinner at the Southern Sun Cape Sun. Attended by Richard Rushton (MD Distell) and Volker Heiden (Area Vice President, Protea Hotels of Marriott International), the cream of South Africa’s hoteliers, chefs, sommeliers and vintners as well as top companies that supply the hospitality industry. This year the theme was to celebrate our rich floral kingdom, one of the finest in the world!

CAPE LEGENDS INTER HOTEL CHALLENGE

 

There is an art to designing a balanced menu, describing dishes precisely, exciting both the palate and the imagination using choice ingredients; premium SA Pork in myriad ways, Lancewood soft white cheese, Rio Largo olive oil and Khoisan sea salt, paired with fine wines from Cape Legends and spirits from Distell. 

 

 

The vital aim of the Cape Legends Inter Hotel Challenge is to encourage development in the hospitality industry that will give a much-needed leg up to young talent. GRAPE TO GLASS 2016

IN THE ENCHANTING WINELANDS OF THE CAPE

 

 

 

 

23 Wine Stewards from around South Africa, proudly representing their individual hotels, were put through their paces at a series of valuable and comprehensive workshops held over a period of three days by the South African Sommeliers Association (SASA) and the Cape Wine Academy both at The Westin Grand, and later at Van Ryn’s Distillery. There they hosted a number of superb whisky, brandy, cognac and sherry tastings conducted by experts in their field.

 

Guided cellar tours and wine tastings took place at several stunning estates, including the historic Die Bergkelder, situated in and around the Cape winelands, part of Distell’s Luxury Wines collection, where our candidates were riveted by top winemakers who shared their knowledge and wine lore with them over the very special day.

elegant home for the first of five events celebrating
the launch of the Cape Legends Inter Hotel Challenge 2016

A five part series - Part One

 

 

The weather was ideal, an exquisite day with a sea that barely rippled, indeed The Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa was a stunning venue. The lunch took place in a superb cream marquee that showed off the table arrangements to perfection. Lunch, a collaborative menu, was masterminded by five Executive Chefs of the Cape’s top hotels; Rudi Liebenberg (Belmond Mount Nelson), Grant Cullingworth (The Westin), Shyam Longani (Taj Cape Town), Craig Carmichael (Radisson Blu Le Vendome) and Christo Pretorius (The Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa) who was overseas at the time attending the Red Carnation’s annual gala event. In his absence the stunning main course was prepared by their Head Chef, Michael McIntyre.

The rain cleared and we were fortunate to have an ideal day for our delightful Sunday alfreso lunch in a spreading Bedouin tent in the charming shaded garden of The Maslow. Lunch, a collaborative menu, was masterminded by five Chefs of Gauteng’s top hotels; Phil de Villiers (Executive Chef, 54 on Bath), Tarryn Coetzee (Sous Chef, Southern Sun Hyde Park), Executive Chef Jason Millar and Adrian Vaughan (Sous Chef, The Maslow), Jacques Etsebeth (Executive Chef Protea Hotel Balalaika) and Gerard Vingerling (Executive Head Chef The Palazzo).
