DEFINING MOMENTS AT THE ONE&ONLY REACHING FOR YOUNG STARS AWARDS CEREMONY

 

 

 

 

The One&Only Reaching for Young Stars, the top culinary event for student chefs and wine stewards, celebrates its six consecutive year hosted by the One&Only Cape Town with eight of the Cape’s most prominent cookery schools; Cape Town Hotel School part of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), Capsicum Culinary Studio, Eziko Cooking and Training Centre, The Hurst Campus, International Hotel School, The Private Hotel School, Silwood School of Cookery and the South African Chefs Academy. The annual prize-giving ceremony took place on 3rd November attended by the who’s who of the culinary cognoscenti with the Deputy Minister Tokozile Xasa presenting a tourism update.

CAPE LEGENDS INTER HOTEL CHALLENGE

 

The Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa was the
elegant home for the first of five events celebrating
the launch of the Cape Legends Inter Hotel Challenge 2016

A five part series - Part One

 

 

The weather was ideal, an exquisite day with a sea that barely rippled, indeed The Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa was a stunning venue. The lunch took place in a superb cream marquee that showed off the table arrangements to perfection. Lunch, a collaborative menu, was masterminded by five Executive Chefs of the Cape’s top hotels; Rudi Liebenberg (Belmond Mount Nelson), Grant Cullingworth (The Westin), Shyam Longani (Taj Cape Town), Craig Carmichael (Radisson Blu Le Vendome) and Christo Pretorius (The Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa) who was overseas at the time attending the Red Carnation’s annual gala event. In his absence the stunning main course was prepared by their Head Chef, Michael McIntyre.

It is undeniably true that bread is the staff of life and a warm welcome to your guests. Few can resist that crisp crust or that fragrant slice. When Robert Carrier, one of the most famous cooks and writers worldwide, came to dinner he first lifted up a slice of our stone ground whole wheat bread and breathed in the aroma. It took the brilliant chef, Alice Waters at Chez Panisse in Berkeley, to shake up the American public and introduce them to the virtues of the best loaf. Since then her message has spread worldwide and today a distinctive bread is often the signature of a good establishment and so it should be!

The scene was set in the late afternoon for the Crème de la Crème Executive Chefs’ evening and continued with canapés and bubbly as the sun dipped and Cape Town was revealed in a shower of stars. The Westin, our host for the fourth launch of the Cape Legends Inter Hotel Challenge, was the venue for the dinner prepared by five top Executive Chefs; Grant Cullingworth (The Westin), Rudi Liebenberg (Belmond Mount Nelson), Malika van Reenen (Cape Grace), Shyam Longani (Taj Cape Town) and Carl van Rooyen (Vineyard Hotel).

2015 Sees the announcement of the Cape Legends Inter Hotel Challenge now in its third year, including Port Elizabeth, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Cape on board. The heart-warming enthusiasm and achievement over the past two years has been a joy to see.

 

The challenge has gone beyond the competitive and become a unifying spirit, a collaborative force in the hotel industry encompassing the broad and vital role of development and advancement.

Glamorous Reuben’s was the setting at the One&Only, Cape Town for the annual One&Only Reaching for Young Stars awards ceremony. Five major cookery schools; Cape Town Hotel School (CPUT), Silwood School of Cookery, South African Chefs Academy, The International Hotel School and The Hurst Campus took part in this carefully constructed competition.

Lunch at Reuben’s Friday, 6th September 2013

 

C E L E B R A T E  T H E  D A Y!

 

 

 Winning Duo of Chefs; Lauren Case and Josh Wiid of the South African Chefs Academy created an excellent starter of braised pork cheek, served with light gnocchi and flavourful celeriac studded with nastergal berries.


 

South African Minister of Tourism Marthinus van Schalkwyk gave an excellent and pertinent keynote address updating the audience on tourism trends, undoubtedly South Africa is on the march with excellent hotel occupancies. Charismatic Reuben Riffel presented the prizes and gave a warm and eloquent address to the students. Our guest speaker was South African born Rozanne Stevens, who is now a popular broadcaster and teacher in Ireland. Rozanne has recently brought out Relish BBQ and Al Fresco Food, the second book in ‘The Ish Factor Series’

INTER HOTEL CHALLENGE! CELEBRATION DINNER

 

It was a glittering evening at the historic Vineyard Hotel & Spa on 26th September 2013. The culmination of much preparation, press lunches with Executive Chefs to introduce their candidates chefs and wine stewards. There were grape to glass experiences in the splendid vineyards with top winemakers and finally a two day cook-off at the South African Chefs Academy with the ten hotels who entered for the first Inter Hotel Challenge in Cape Town and a first in South Africa.

 

 

The term hospitality embraces many facets and what the Inter hotel Challenge does is to promote nurturing and mentoring for our candidate chefs and wine stewards. Everyone should be congratulated on their splendid entries. We know that not everyone can be a winner, but what was important was that they participated and succeeded beyond expectation!
